Mrs. Mary Smith, one of the oldest residents here, died suddenly at her home early Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 1920, pneumonia being the cause of her death. Deceased, whose maiden name was Mary J. Brown, was born at Buffalo, N.Y. Dec. 21, 1846. She came to Milwaukee with her parents when a child. They later moved to West Bend, where she grew to womanhood. She attended Ripon College and taught school at Ripon. On April 22, 1866, she was married to Augustus Smith. They came to Clark County, Wis. about 51 years ago, settling on their farm in the town of Weston, where they lived until moving to Neillsville about 25 years ago. Mrs. Smith was a woman of rare beauty of character, intelligent and sympathetic, when was ready to help in all good things, both in her home and in the neighborhood. In early pioneer days she was always found helping when there was sickness or distress.
She was a member of the W.R.C. for 35 years, being a charter member of the local post and serving for many years as an officer.
She leaves four children, Mrs. Lillian Melville, Brookfield, Ill.; Milton A. Smith, Chicago; George H. Smith, Elmhurst, Ill.; Mrs. Josephine Burge, Neillsville; two brothers, Geo. Brown of Denver and Maxwell Brown of Weston, and a sister, Dr. Sarah Brown of Brookfield, Ill. She leaves also 9 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m., Rev. Longenecker and Rev. Kerr officiating.
The two sons and Mrs. Geo. H. Smith were here from away to attend the funeral. The W.R.C. attended as a body.
