Brown - Oct 16th, 1875, of congestion of the brain. Joseph Brown, aged 75 years, 4 months. Deceased was born June 12, 1800 in Leicester England of Scotch (sic) parents; raised in Hamilton, Scotland; returned to England in 1822, and came with his family to the state of New York in 1843; emigrated to Wisconsin in 1845, and resided in West Bend, Washington County, until coming to Clark County in 1871.
Married Ann Black in London, Middlesex County on 3 Aug 1828. Family resided in Nottingham at Cross Street (1835 birth of Elizabeth,1841 UK Census). The family arrived in New York Aug 24,1842 from Liverpool England aboard the SS Europe. Listed on the manifest are Joseph age 42; Ann age 36; John age 13; Elizabeth age 7; Thomas age 5; Sarah as infant. The ship's master was Samuel Barker. They shared the voyage, which lasted about nine weeks, with 199 additional immigrants.
They settled in Buffalo NY where Joseph was a shoemaker. His son John helped his father in the business and became a shoemaker himself. The business was located at 441 Michigan Street.
The family moved to Milwaukee, WI in 1848, and settled in Addison Township, Washington County, WI by1850. In1860 they are living in West Bend, Washington County, WI. In 1871 Joseph and his wife removed to Weston WI to spend their last days on the farm of their daughter Mary Jane Brown Smith.
